Sophia Chung’s Gallery

Art can be so much more than just a sense of beauty; it has the power of healing. I am Sophia Chung, a Malaysian studio-art-and-psychology graduate at Lenoir-Rhyne University. My view and perspective resulting from being born and bred in a multiracial country have filled my artworks with different varieties. My passion for life and people sparks me with overflowing inspirations combined with my well-trained painting skills, which ultimately creates many stunning paintings. Art is indeed powerful.
Art as a tool for Healing
Art is a meaningful tool for me to learn more about myself as well as others. I am working towards becoming an art therapist that by using art, healings can be brought to not only myself, but also others. According to Malchiodi, “Visually dealing with traumatic emotions can feel safer than dealing with them in words.” Creating art can become an outlet of emotion for both myself and the viewer, because art can say so much more than what one has intended. Thus, healing is possible.

Art as a means of Recording
I love journaling. Painting the subconscious on paper/ canvas helps me express feelings and release emotions best. The emotional releases which you can find in my artworks include, but not limited to, my struggle to trust God; my loneliness as an alien in a foreign land; and the fight between myself and stress/anxiety. Illustrations and/or acrylic and oil paintings are my way to do that.

Art as a way of bringing Awareness
A picture speaks a thousand words. This category of paintings include psychological emotions, cultural experiences, and environmental issues. Most of them are surrealistic, abstract, figurative, or illustrative and seek to ask, “What do you see?” These artworks are intended to spark deep and meaningful conversations with every individual audience by providing a stage of thought and discussion. There is no absolute answer, but it aids the process of diving into deeper questions of the heart.
